Body doubling

Body doubling with someone you actually know

Body doubling works because somebody else is there. Every app that offers it decided the somebody had to be a stranger on camera.

The problem

The camera is doing the wrong job

Being watched by a stranger is a commitment device, and for a lot of people it genuinely works. It is also a performance, which is why the sessions are tiring and why so many people quietly stop booking them.

The point was never that somebody could see you. It was that somebody would notice if you did not turn up.

What actually works
What it does

The effect, without the audience

Everything that makes body doubling work, and nothing that makes it a performance.

They see you started

Not your face, not your desk. Just that you are in a session and how long is left. That is the whole signal, and it is enough.

A pause is shared

Stopping is visible because the clock stops for both of you. You cannot quietly drift off without the other person knowing.

Nothing to book

No slot, no queue, no waiting for a match. Your person is already your person, so starting is one tap.

How it works

Three steps, then it is a habit

01
Pick your double

A friend, a sibling, a partner. Somebody whose opinion of whether you showed up matters to you.

02
Agree a length

25, 50, 90, or type your own. Both of you see the same clock counting.

03
Let the streak build

The record is with one named person, which is what makes breaking it cost something.

See it

What your double actually sees

Their local time, that you are in a session, and how much of it is left. Nothing else.

Common questions

Before you start

Does it do anything without a double?
It becomes an ordinary focus timer, which is worth saying plainly rather than overselling. Sessions run, the streak counts, nothing is gated. But the accountability is the entire mechanism here, and a timer nobody else can see does not supply it.
Is this real body doubling if we cannot see each other?
The mechanism is presence and accountability, not surveillance. You know someone else started, they know if you stop, and the session is a commitment you both made. What a camera adds beyond that is the feeling of being observed, which some people want and many find is the reason they stopped.
Does it help with ADHD?
Body doubling is widely used in the ADHD community and a lot of people find it the single most effective thing they have tried. We are not going to claim clinical evidence for this app specifically, because there is none. What it does is remove the setup friction and the camera, which are the two reasons people report giving up on it.
What if my person is not free?
Then there is no session. There is no matching and no fallback to a stranger, which is a real limitation. If you need someone available at any hour, an open room or a matching service is the better tool.
